Notes: 1: Red Top starting batteries are not covered for deep cycle/car audio use: Use a deep cycle Blue Top or Yellow Top battery. 2: During a "pro-rated" warranty period, compensation for defect is based on the portion of total warranty period that remains. 3: Deep cycle models, when used in series string applications with battery management system or CV/CC charge method have 12 month warranty. 4: Deep cycle models, when used in series string applications without battery management system or CV/CC charge method have 1 month warranty. 5: Red Top Optima batteries in commercial applications have 12 month free replacement + 36 months pro-rated warranty. |
Question:
Why are warranties shorter for deep cycle batteries? Answer: The more times you deep discharge any battery -- even deep cycle batteries, which are made for that purpose -- the shorter its lifespan will be. But in many applications a battery will be deep discharged only occasionally. In such an application the deep cycle battery will normally last longer than a Red Top battery would. We frequently hear from Optima users whose batteries have lasted eight to ten years (and even more) in non-deep-cycling uses. How long your deep cycle battery lasts will depend on how it's used. The following descriptions outline situations where a deep cycle battery is the best choice: Situation A: Frequent, heavy deep cyling applications. If your application calls for frequent deep cycling of the battery, you need a deep cycle battery. A non-deep-cycle battery used in such an application will have a short lifespan. Examples include inverter applications, marine trolling motors, frequent winching, and car audio loads beyond the alternator's output (or w/o the engine running.) The largest deep cycle battery that will fit will have the longest lifespan, and it's often advisable to run multiple batteries connected together. Situation B: Occasional deep cycling applications. Examples include the starter battery in an off-road vehicle equipped with a winch that's used infrequently, or occasional use of an inverter connected to your vehicle. You'll get the best performance and longest lifespan with a deep cycle battery like the D31 or D34 series batteries. And the larger battery (D31), if you have room for it, will have a longer lifespan because it won't need to be discharged as deeply as a smaller battery to accomplish the same task. The less deeply the battery is discharged, the longer its lifespan will be. Battery Abuse: An additional reason why deep cycle batteries (industry-wide) have shorter warranty periods is that a disproportionate share of deep cycle batteries receive abusive treatment. Abusive practices include failure to recharge the battery after deep discharging, or discharging below the rated minimum 10.5 volts. |
